These analogues can serve as alternative substrates and RNA chain terminators for viral RNA dependent RNA polymerase. GS- 441524 has a non-toxic concentration of up to 100 in feline cells, effectively inhibiting FIPV replication in CRFK cell culture and natural infection. The concentration of peritoneal macrophages in cats is as low as 1.
